Three techniques,
one heritage.
Crochet is where MARA began — the foundation every piece is built on. As we reached new regions of the Northeast, we wove in the techniques that belong to each one.
Where it all started. Worked with a single hook, loop by loop, crochet builds the soft, sculptural bodies at the heart of every MARA piece.
An art of knots. Each cord is tied entirely by hand into open, rhythmic patterns — texture and shadow built knot by knot.
The braid. Strands of carnaúba and buriti are crossed and pressed into firm, structured weaves — the most architectural of our techniques.
Every MARA piece carries a story of craft and ends with a thousand hand stitches. Between the two lie days of work and centuries of know-how, carried in the hands of the women who make them.
Native fibers.
Carnaúba and buriti — native Brazilian palms — give us our thread. The young leaves are cut, stripped and combed by hand into fine, supple fibers, then left to dry in the sun. We work each one in the Northeast region where it grows, the fiber shaped as much by the climate as by the hand.
Drawn from the humid wetlands, its fiber stays supple and warm to the touch — the climate keeps it soft, making it perfect for fluid, sculptural weaves.
Hardened by the dry sertão sun, it holds its shape — the same climate that toughens the leaf gives a finished piece its structure and body.
Dyed beneath
the sun.
Colour comes from the earth — botanical and tree-bark infusions that give our palette its depth. The dyed fibers are hung in the open air, where the Brazilian sun sets every shade by hand and by hour.
Over a thousand
hand stitches.
This is where it becomes MARA. Each artisan works to heritage patterns passed down through her family — knotting, braiding and weaving stitch by stitch, until a single panel emerges over the course of days.
Brought to life,
detail by detail.
Fringes are combed straight, edges finished, hardware set. The piece is checked by the same hands that wove it — then it carries her signature into the world, ready for a life of its own.
A piece you can feel was made by someone — for someone.
